Response to Help MS Word 2000 changes "-" to a box (wingding)

Not all fonts have every character you'd typically find, say, in times roman, arial, courier, etc. The hyphen character may not be present in Antique Olive font, and so when you type that character the little box shape you get is an unoccupied cell, which is not what you want.

The solution: select just the wierd little box character and change the font to Times new roman or arial or courier or even rockwell. It doesn't matter which, they all have the hyphen character. Any normal 'jobbing' font designed for body text work will do. The box character should change to the hyphen character.

Incidentally, the hyphen character is not really the typographer's choice for what you're using it for. Strictly speaking one would use an em dash. The em dash is a much longer dash than a hyphen. It looks better and gives the proper typographic inflection. To get the em dash character press ALT + CTRL + NUMPAD HYPHEN. You could also use an en dash; CTRL + NUMPAD HYPHEN. Or you could use a semicolon like I am here; the semicolon is the colon you use when you don't quite need the full emphasis of a colon.

Best of luck, James
